Norman Akers Prints at Alice Campbell Alumni Center

Akers printThe prints of Norman Akers (Osage Nation of Oklahoma), MFA '91, were on display during Spring 2009 in the Richmond Family Gallery at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center. Born in Fairfax, Okla., Akers served as a visiting professor at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois. His paintings are included in numerous museum collections, and he has participated in many solo and group exhibitions across the country. In 1999, Akers was a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. The same year he received a merit award at the Oklahoma Painting and Drawing Biennial.

Akers has exhibited his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Lawrence Arts Center, the Carl Gorman Museum at the University of California, the Cahoon Museum of American Art in Massachusetts, the Chiaroscuro Gallery in Santa Fe, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, the National Museum of the American Indian/Smithsonian Museums in New York and many more. His awards include a painter-sculptor grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New York and a merit award from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition in Oklahoma City.

Akers holds his BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, a Certificate of Museum Training from the Institute of America Indian Arts, and a MFA in painting from the University of Illinois.
