Board of Trustees Appeals NCAA Ruling
October 20, 2005
The Native American House is disappointed to learn that the Board of Trustees at the University of Illinois has appealed an NCAA ruling that bars the school from hosting championship events because of the "Fighting Illini" nickname and "Chief Illiniwek" mascot. The appeal includes mis-statements and glossing over of facts (see forthcoming response to appeal and letters below for details). Unfortunately, this action once again displays the Board of Trustees' lack of respect for American Indian voices and a lack of comprehension of UIUC’s mascot issue and further signals its failure as a leadership body to support the educational mission of our institution.
